Nebraska Democratic Party Stonewall Democrats Statement on the Supreme Court’s Decision in United States v. Skrmetti
LINCOLN, NE – The Nebraska Democratic Party Stonewall Democrats Vice-Chair Jesse McGrath issues the following statement following the Supreme Court’s decision upholding Tennessee’s law banning gender affirming care:
“Yesterday, the United States Supreme Court upheld a Tennessee law banning gender affirming care for transgender youth. This decision takes away the right of transgender minors, their parents, and their doctors to make fundamental medical decisions about their healthcare and their lives. This decision is a major governmental overreach into parental rights and responsibilities in making medical decisions for their children.
The Supreme Court’s decision allowing these restrictions on medical care for transgender minors is wrong both on a legal and scientific level. The decision in United States v Skrmetti is an endorsement of the Republican Party’s continuing refusal to listen to doctors, scientists, and parents by substituting the ignorance of politicians for the knowledge of professionals and parents who only want what is best for their children.
It is profoundly disappointing and reminds us that Republicans cannot be trusted to protect individual liberty and the right to make independent and informed medical decisions. That is true as it applies to women, transgender Americans, or any other person. The Nebraska Stonewall Democrats are heartbroken by this ruling and what it means to the lives of all Nebraskans.”
