The Nebraska Democratic Party Latinx Caucus Statement on Nebraska Attorney General Hilgers’ Lawsuit to Remove Healthcare from DACA Recipients
LINCOLN, NE – The Nebraska Democratic Party Latinx Caucus issues the following statement on Nebraska Attorney General Hilgers’ Lawsuit to remove healthcare from DACA recipients:
“The Nebraska Democratic Party Latinx Caucus strongly condemns Attorney General Hilgers’ action to join a Republican-led lawsuit attacking DACA (dreamers) recipients and denying them healthcare. Dreamers represent millions of law-abiding residents who pay state and federal taxes. They contribute millions to local economies and represent all industries and walks of life. For thousands in our state, Nebraska is the only home they have ever known. Many do not have access to various state and federal programs. With the lawsuit, Republicans are fabricating a problem when you factor in Dreamers’ contributions. Nebraska Republicans like Attorney General Hilgers do not get a free pass on attacking our Latino community and their well-being. Health care is a right that should be afforded to all those who contribute to our state and Dreamers are a significant part of the solution. We hope that a permanent solution is championed by the Harris-Walz administration when elected so that Dreamers and the immigrant community stop being attacked.”

The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program was established on June 15, 2012, by then-Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano. DACA provides temporary relief from deportation and work authorization to certain vetted young undocumented immigrants who came to the United States as children. While it does not grant permanent legal status, it allows recipients to work, study, and live without the constant fear of deportation. This program has significantly improved the socioeconomic mobility of many young people, enabling them to access better jobs and educational opportunities.
