A Safe Option In A Moment Of Panic
Mon, Jul 23 11:29 AM CST
Last week a young mother left her unwanted child at St. Elizabeth’s hospital after delivering her baby girl just 11 hours prior. Despite the fact that the mother had her child in a hospital instead of a back alleyway or bathroom, she now faces a misdemeanor charge for child abandonment. Nebraska and Alaska are the only states left in the nation that have not adopted a safe haven law, allowing panicked mothers to leave unwanted babies at hospitals, police stations, and fire stations and thereby relinquishing all paternal rights of the child.

Tue, Jul 17 03:52 PM CST
State Auditor Mike Foley came out with a report doubting whether state tax dollars awarded to students based on the reduced-price or free school lunch program were being distributed fairly. According to a federal review of the program, Nebraska acknowledges 21 percent of children in the state as eligible for the school lunch program, using about $21.5 million of aid.
Thank Goodness the Gas Tax Hike Didn’t Go Through
Fri, Jul 13 11:21 AM CST
If you’re planning car trip any time soon, I’d wait to fill up outside of the state. Nebraska takes the second highest gas prices in the nation this week. Currently behind only Michigan at $3.345 a gallon, Nebraska still sits at $3.330 as reported by AAA Friday morning, but prices have been steadily rising.

Starting in 2008, vision tests will be required for older drivers, and younger drivers with provisional licenses and school permits will be barred use of electronic communication devices while driving. Translation: no text messaging, dialing or talking on the phone while driving.
Nebraska Leaving its "Carbon Footprint"
Mon, Jun 4 11:25 AM CST
Today a report came out of the Associated Press discussing carbon dioxide emission comparisons throughout the nation. “Blame it on coal: Texas leads in carbon emissions overall” by Seth Borenstein states that “while Californians have cut their per-person carbon dioxide emissions by 11 percent from 1990 to 2003, Nebraskans have increased their per capita emissions by 16 percent over the same time frame”. The article goes on to discuss that with the exception of California, the states releasing the most carbon dioxide are doing the least to control the problem. I was surprised at Nebraska’s increase in comparison to other states.

Omaha World-Herald institution Harold W. Andersen may no longer be a registered Republican – last year, announcing he was becoming an independent after his disgust over the GOPs exploitation of Terri Schiavo and her family – but I’m sad to report that single act of self-liberation has not been reflected in his thinking and writing.
