Nebraska Democratic Party Official Statement on the Passing of Reverend Jesse Jackson
LINCOLN, NE – The Nebraska Democratic Party Chair and ASDC President Jane Kleeb issued the following statement regarding the passing of reverend, civil rights activist, and former Democratic Party presidential candidate, Jesse Jackson:
“Jesse Jackson transformed our party. He was not welcomed at first – insiders closed doors and resisted change. But Jackson never gave up. He organized relentlessly and built a broad ‘Rainbow Coalition,’ uniting Americans to challenge the status quo of traditional campaigns.
Because of that movement, the Democratic National Committee today includes 75 At-Large seats intended to represent the grassroots coalition of our party. Jackson forced Democrats to confront the realities of racism, economic inequality, and the divide between urban and rural communities.
His words still ring true today, as he said on the back of a tractor during the 1980s farm crisis: “It is time for the eaters and the feeders, Black and white, to unite for justice.”
