I\u2019m sure by this point we\u2019ve all heard about the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) \u2013 the brainchild of President Trump and his Billionaire-in-Chief Elon Musk.<\/p>\n

DOGE has a simple mission \u2013 cut costs, run government like a business, and make it \u201cmore efficient\u201d. And to be honest, it\u2019s a pretty good mission! I\u2019m all for saving money, and you\u2019d have to be insane to\u00a0kh\u00f4ng ph\u1ea3i<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0want your tax money to be spent efficiently.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the thing about Elon and his DOGE team though,\u00a0they suck at their jobs.<\/em><\/strong><\/a>\"\"<\/p>\n

I mean \u2013 look at them. I\u2019m 24 years old for context \u2013 these kids are my age, and I can\u00a0assure<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0you that nobody my age, let alone younger, has any business deciding to\u00a0lay off air traffic controllers<\/em>\u00a0or decide\u00a0how many nuclear physicists to fire<\/em>, or God forbid\u00a0have access to the social security number of every American<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s be real for a minute here, folks.\u00a0Elon\u2019s mission is to \u201creconstruct\u201d the government \u2013 but he didn\u2019t hire experienced builders, he hired an ignorant, inexperienced wrecking crew.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Cutting Costs? Or Cutting Corners.<\/h3>\n

Building on this idea of \u201cre-constructing\u201d the government \u2013 we\u2019ve all had work done to our house or apartment. Whether it\u2019s our own handiwork or that of someone who is hired, you don\u2019t want to cut corners when you\u2019re building.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s one thing to choose an affordable backsplash as opposed to an expensive one or cut some costs by picking cheap cabinet knobs. It\u2019s a whole nother thing to try and cut costs on your big-ticket structural items.<\/p>\n

If you don\u2019t install the countertop correctly, then the cabinets go in wrong, and the cabinet doors go in wrong, and then when you finally take a step back, the whole kitchen looks wonky and screwed up, regardless of how much money you saved!<\/p>\n

What Elon and his buddies are doing isn\u2019t saving money on a different backsplash, or picking the more affordable flooring option \u2013 they\u2019re cutting corners on such a structural level that the whole government is going to be effed up when we finally take a step back and are able to see the big picture.<\/p>\n

And that brings me to my next point \u2013 what even is the point of our government? To me \u2013\u00a0good government is invisible!<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0It makes your life easier without you having to think about it<\/em><\/strong>. Good governing is when you don\u2019t have to worry about potholes because they\u2019re all fixed, or you don’t have to worry if your checks will come in the mail on time.<\/p>\n

Bad government, on the other hand, is\u00a0v\u00f4 c\u00f9ng<\/em>\u00a0visible!\u00a0Bad governing is when there\u2019s a new plane crash every day because of staff cuts to the FAA, or when\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>scientists researching the bird flu are \u201caccidentally\u201d fired amidst an outbreak<\/em><\/strong><\/a>.<\/em><\/strong>\"\"<\/p>\n

At the end of the day, it doesn\u2019t matter how much money Musk and DOGE save taxpayers if the government doesn\u2019t even function at the end of the day.<\/p>\n

Sure, it\u2019d be great if my taxes were cut by $100\/year or something because of reasonable cuts, but\u00a0I\u2019d gladly pay my fair share extra in taxes if it meant I didn\u2019t have to worry about getting on a plane or if my chicken was going to make me deathly ill.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

A Vehicle for Good<\/h3>\n

All this shit with Trump, Musk, and cutting government funding and jobs makes me reflect on the purpose of our federal government.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s my simple take:\u00a0The United States Federal Government should exist to deliver the most good to the most people.<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0Pretty simple!<\/p>\n

So \u2013 let\u2019s play a game here, I\u2019ll call it\u2026<\/p>\n

Whose Life Is This Making Better??<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

Okay, first up, we have a word problem \u2013 USAID is a federal organization that helps fund research and development both in the US and globally.\u00a0In 2024, the University of Nebraska received $19 million in USAID funding to host an Innovation Lab for Irrigation and Mechanization Systems.\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>Elon Musk and Donald Trump completely cut off funding to this program<\/p>\n

Drumroll, please\u2026. Now say it with me! Whose life is this making better??<\/p>\n

And the answer is\u2026. Nobody!<\/p>\n

Here \u2013 maybe that was just a coincidence, let\u2019s try another one.<\/p>\n

DOGE has cut approximately $502 million in funding to the Department of Education, specifically slashing funding to the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA).<\/p>\n

And another drumroll please folks\u2026 you know the line! Whose life is this making better???<\/p>\n

And the answer is\u2026 literally nobody!<\/p>\n

If you take that $500 million, divided approximately the 160 million taxpayers, it saved you $3.12 to make sure that disabled students don\u2019t have access to resources. Congrats America!!\u00a0Now, students with disabilities are under-resourced, all so that you can save less than \u00bd the price of a large latte at Starbucks.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

So\u2026 to circle back to my original point \u2013 why do we have a federal government? We don\u2019t have a federal government to save money, or to cut corners;\u00a0our federal government exists to deliver to the people and make the lives of\u00a0t\u1ea5t c\u1ea3<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0Americans just a little bit better every day, regardless of the cost.<\/a><\/p>\n

Annddddd in other news this week, Trump has tried to declare himself a king\u2026 like, literally.<\/p>\n

Not only has he depicted himself with a crown, but he\u2019s unilaterally declared himself Minister of Culture too; firing the whole Executive Board of the Kennedy Center for the Arts, and appointing himself as Chair.<\/p>\n

The notion of Hollywood going \u201cwoke\u201d is so funny to me \u2013 if Trump wants just movies to be about feel-good, milquetoast white families \u2013 we already have the Hallmark channel! No need to be President to achieve these outcomes, Donny.<\/p>\n

Whether it\u2019s by handing off \u201cgoverning\u201d to his buddy Elon, or every podcast appearance to his disgraced heir-apparent JD Vance, it\u2019s clear Trump has no interest in governing. He could\u2019ve stayed in reality TV and spared all of us the pain of these 10 years.<\/p>\n
