The Millard Education Association board of directors has voted unanimously to withdraw its endorsement of long-time school board member Mike Kelly after he posted a racial slur on Facebook.<\/span><\/p>\n

KETV reported late Monday<\/span><\/a> that the board took the action after Kennedy\u2019s recent <\/span>b\u00e0i \u0111\u0103ng Facebook<\/span><\/a> demeaned U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren — who has been been referred to by President Trump as \u201cPocahontas\u201d because of her Native American heritage.<\/span><\/p>\n

For his part, Kennedy brushed off the action and said the post was \u201c<\/span>some light humor.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Nebraska Democratic <\/span>Party Chair Jane Kleeb said she failed to find the humor in the post.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSimply put, it was not funny,\u201d Kleeb said. \u201cIt was racist. Period. End of story. He needs to withdraw his re-election bid.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u0110\u1ea3ng D\u00e2n ch\u1ee7 Dulce <\/span>Sherman, who is running for a seat on the Millard school board, said Kennedy\u2019s comment demeans the 22 percent of students in <\/span>Millard schools who are minorities.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf he thinks making racial comments about minorities is \u2018light humor,\u2019 he needs to look all those kids in the eye and explain why,\u2019\u2019 Sherman said. \u201cBut he won\u2019t, because it wasn\u2019t funny. He knows that. It was demeaning and insulting and particularly appalling coming from a man who was elected to serve all students.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Frank LaMere, vice chair of the Nebraska Democratic Party and a member of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska, noted, as he did earlier, that students at Millard South High School some 20 years ago <\/span>called for the end and the retirement of their Indian mascot because of the stereotypes it perpetuated and because of the subtle and blatant racism it conveyed.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI renew my call for Mike Kennedy to end his run for school board and to apologize to Native Americans and other minorities across Nebraska,\u201d LaMere said.<\/span><\/p>\n
