The careening crazy train that is today’s Republican Party has finally jumped the rails.<\/p>\n

That became obvious late last week when the Republican National Committee — which in theory acts as the unifying organization within the party — passed a resolution censuring GOP Sens. Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger for working on the House probe of the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection by supporters of then-President Trump to try to overturn the 2020 election.<\/p>\n

The resolution called the committee\u2019s work \u201ca Democrat-led persecution of ordinary citizens engaged in legitimate political discourse.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cue the Washington Post\u2019s\u00a0Dana Milbank<\/a>:<\/p>\n

Legitimate political discourse! Seven people died in connection with the attack, 140 police officers were hurt and 734 people have been prosecuted on charges ranging up to seditious conspiracy. Marauders sacked the Capitol for the first time since the War of 1812, threatening assassination, and smashing, clubbing and defecating to the tune of $1.5 million in property damage.<\/em><\/p>\n

But the Republican Party says it\u2019s all legit. Just a bit of civil discourse.<\/em><\/p>\n

As Rudy Giuliani once said: \u201cTruth isn\u2019t truth.\u201d Piling on the absurdity, RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said the resolution doesn\u2019t refer to insurrectionists; its plain language says otherwise.<\/em><\/p>\n

Among the Jan. 6 activities so justified:<\/em><\/p>\n

Blinding police officers with bear spray.<\/em><\/p>\n

Throwing rocks, bottles, furniture and incendiary devices at them.<\/em><\/p>\n

Gouging their eyes.<\/em><\/p>\n

Beating them with flagpoles, sticks and bullhorns.<\/em><\/p>\n

Punching, kicking and dragging them down stairs.<\/em><\/p>\n

Tasing them and hurling a fire extinguisher at them.<\/em><\/p>\n

Smashing windows and doors.<\/em><\/p>\n

Carrying zip ties onto the Senate floor.<\/em><\/p>\n

Ransacking desks and offices.<\/em><\/p>\n

And all this with murder on their lips.<\/em><\/p>\n

Rep. Don Bacon was asked by Omaha’s KMTV to comment on the RNC resolution and responded with a mealy-mouthed statement about focusing on the 2022 election and that the “GOP stands with law enforcement and rule of law.\u201d Reps. Jeff Fortenberry and Adrian Smith have been silent.<\/p>\n

Sigh.<\/p>\n

Every two years, county parties and the Nebraska Democratic party hold conventions to conduct party business and elect officers and delegates for the State Central Committee.<\/p>\n

The County Party Conventions are scheduled for March 1-20 and are virtual this year.<\/p>\n
