After weeks of irresponsible dismissiveness about the coronavirus, President Trump finally brought himself to admit that, yes, Houston, we have a problem.
But to see all his coronavirus utterances together, compiled by the folks over at The Bulwark in chronological order, is truly mind-numbing. And horrifying.
Jan. 22
“We have it totally under control. It’s one person coming in from China. It’s going to be just fine.”
January 31:
“Well, we pretty much shut it down coming in from China. We have a tremendous relationship with China, which is a very positive thing. Getting along with China, getting along with Russia.”
February 2:
“We pretty much shut it down coming in from China.”
February 10:
“A lot of people think that goes away in April with the heat — as the heat comes in.”
February 24:
“The Coronavirus is very much under control in the USA. Stock Market starting to look very good to me.”
February 26:
“The number of people infected [is] going very substantially down, not up.The 15 [cases] within a couple of days, is going to be down to zero.”
February 27:
“It’s going to disappear one day, it’s like a miracle.”
March 2:
(On the prospects of a coronavirus vaccine): “I’ve heard very quick numbers, that of months.”
March 6
(remarks at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention): "I like this stuff. I really get it. People are surprised that I understand it. … Every one of these doctors said, ‘How do you know so much about this?’ Maybe I have a natural ability. Maybe I should have done that instead of running for president.”
“I didn’t know people died from the flu.”
“Anybody who wants a test gets a test.” [Note: This was a lie at the time and remains dangerously untrue today. The previous day, Vice President Mike Pence said, “We don’t have enough tests today to meet what we anticipate will be the demand going forward.”]

As of this morning, there were 254,799 coronavirus cases recorded and 10,447 deaths.
