***Nebraska Democratic Party News Press Release for 2-7-2024***
Republicans Want Chaos. Border Bill Rejected.
LINCOLN, NE – The Nebraska Democratic Party Chair Jane Kleeb issues the following statement regarding the Nebraska Federal Delegation—Ricketts, Fischer, Bacon, Flood, and Smith— rejecting the proposed bipartisan border bill with President Biden:
“Donald Trump’s grip on the Republican Party is now destroying a border bill that even the border patrol union supports. It is clear Nebraska’s Republican delegation – from Don Bacon to Pete Ricketts – wants to campaign on the problem rather than a solution.
Democrats, and some Republican Senators, have put humane proposals on the table to both deal with criminal activity at the border while also making sure those seeking asylum have a legal process to follow. A bill in fact that the conservative-leaning Wall Street Journal lays out in an editorial that this is a bill that Trump could never get done.
And yet, the Republicans refuse to get the bill to the President’s desk.”
Key Border Bill Components:
- Hiring of additional border agents and asylum officers
- Expedite removal process of single adult migrants without judicial intervention
- Expedite asylum process from years to months
- Additional sites and aid to migrant processing centers
- End “catch-and-release” policy
- Emergency shut-down of the border based on daily encounters
- Additional screening for fentanyl and other drugs
خلفية: On Sunday, a bipartisan border bill was released by the U.S. Senate after months of negotiations with the Biden Administration. Many provisions, once considered extreme by immigration advocates, were presented as necessary in an effort to curb illegal immigration. The bill proposes an overhaul to the system with tougher and quicker enforcement measures.
The conservative وول ستريت جورنال took issue with many Congressional Republicans outright rejecting the proposed border bill as a “do-nothing” approach. Additional media outlets, like CNN, reported that many Republicans had taken orders from former President Donald Trump to “hold off” on legislation to avoid giving President Biden a victory on the immigration issue.
Additionally, the National Border Patrol Council, a labor union representing over 18,000 border patrol officers that endorsed former president Trump in 2020, has come out in support of the bipartisan border deal as a pragmatic solution that will have immediate effects.
“The Border Act of 2024 will codify, into law, authorities that U.S. Border Patrol agents never had in the past. This will allow us to remove single adults expeditiously and without a lengthy judicial review, which historically has required the release of these individuals into the interior of the U.S. This alone will drop illegal border crossings nationwide and will allow a great many of our agents to get back to detecting and apprehending those who want to cross our borders illegally and evade apprehension. While not perfect, the Border Act of 2024 is a step in the right direction and is far better than the status quo, which is why the National Border Patrol Council endorses this bill and hopes for a quick passage.” – Brandon Judd, President of The National Border Patrol Council
