Nebraska Democratic Party Latino Caucus Statement on ICE Raids in Omaha and Rural Communities
OMAHA, NE – The Nebraska Democratic Party Latino Caucus Chair Jennifer Reyna issues the following statement regarding yesterday’s ICE raids in Omaha and the surrounding communities:
“As Chair of the Latino Caucus of the Nebraska Democratic Party, I am horrified and heartbroken by the ICE raids currently unfolding in Omaha and the surrounding communities. Reports confirm that federal immigration agents have targeted several major employment sites and have apprehended workers, instilling fear across the immigrant community.
These actions are not simply disruptive to all involved – they are cruel, violent, and deeply inhumane. South Omaha is more than a zip code – it is my home, and it is home to the largest Latino population in the state of Nebraska. But this crisis does not stop at South Omaha. These raids are reaching into rural communities like Grand Island and Fremont.
Please know that you have rights:
- Do not have to open your door unless ICE shows a valid warrant signed by a judge
- You have the right to remain silent
- You have the right to speak to a lawyer
- Do not sign anything without legal advice
Local organizations are mobilizing to offer legal and emergency support. CIRA (Center for Immigrant and Refugee Advancement), Heartland Workers Center, and local immigration lawyers are actively providing resources, advocacy, and support for those being targeted.
We want to thank our local elected officials, beginning with Douglas County Commissioner Roger Garcia and Omaha Mayor John Ewing, for their swift and vocal responses to this issue in the Omaha metro area. Their leadership and solidarity are critical in this moment, and we encourage more elected officials and community leaders across Nebraska to follow their example by standing with our immigrant communities.
We understand that ICE will be in our area for the next three weeks. We will continue to do our part to assist those impacted by the loss of loved ones to these raids.
To our community: We see you. We stand with you. And we will not stop fighting for you.”
