Nebraska Democratic Party Statement on the Omaha General Election Results and Historic Win by John Ewing for Mayor

LINCOLN, NE – The Nebraska Democratic Party issues the following statement regarding the Omaha City General Election results:

“Tonight, John Ewing Jr. made history as the first African-American mayor in the state since Reconstruction. Ewing’s victory rings in a new era for Omaha and the entire state of Nebraska. Tonight’s victory comes on the heels of Nebraska Democrats’ sweeping local elections last week in Lincoln and proves what we already know: voters are sick of Republicans’ one-party rule and endless attacks on working families. Nebraskans are demanding change. As a public servant for 43 years, Mayor-elect Ewing’s commitment to the people of the great state of Nebraska speaks for itself, and I have no doubt that Omaha’s future is bright under his leadership. My fellow Nebraskans: we made historic progress tonight, and tomorrow, the hard work continues on as we look to 2026. Democrats are here to do the work for the people.” – Chair Jane Kleeb

“The Mayor-Elect will have Democratic allies in Pete Festersen, LaVonya Goodwin, Danny Begley, and Ron Hug on the Omaha City Council. We congratulate them on putting in the work to lead their respective districts. The voters of Omaha have moved the city towards a strengthened blue dot as we head into the 2026 midterm elections.

I am particularly proud of Mayor-Elect Ewing, after volunteering for my first campaign 27 years ago, where Brenda Council came within the mayoral office by 735 votes. Today we have accomplished something monumental that will bring needed diversity into the top leadership position of our city.” – Executive Director Precious McKesson
