Nebraska Democratic Party Statement on the Donald Trump and Republican-led Pending Government Shutdown

LINCOLN, NE – The Nebraska Democratic Party Chair Jane Kleeb issued the following statement following the Donald Trump and Republican Party-led pending government shutdown:

“Donald Trump and Congressional Republicans own the pending government shutdown. Instead of putting American families first, Trump and Republicans choose to enrich their billionaire buddies and threaten mass layoffs for federal workers, as if they are the problem. Instead of moving our country forward, they enact hurtful tariffs that will cause farmers and small businesses to go bankrupt.

By controlling the presidency, the Senate, and the House, Republicans have no excuse. This includes all of Nebraska’s federal delegation. Instead of negotiating in good faith, Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson told his members to go home during the most critical time, allowing the government to come to a standstill.

Democrats have been unified in lowering costs, saving healthcare for millions of Americans, and pushing back on Trump and Speaker Johnson’s disastrous policies that do nothing to put American families first.”

Instead of moving our country forward, Republicans continue to attack the average American family with a government shutdown and policies that will cause additional pain. Costs for 22 million Americans are set to skyrocket by an average of 75% when premiums under the Affordable Care Act expire, due to Republicans’ inaction, following the signing of the Trump budget bill on July 4, 2025. For Nebraska, that means an average person paying $314 with subsidized market coverage will have to pay $815 when the premium credits expire. An additional 17 million Americans will lose their healthcare altogether because of the billionaire-first budget bill, including 78,000 in Nebraska. Cuts to healthcare remain deeply unpopular, with a vast majority of Americans, 71%, opposing cuts to Medicaid. Republicans know these massive cuts, along with crushing tariffs, are unpopular and refuse to hold town halls or talk about the damage that is still to come.
