ICYMI: President Biden Announced 13 New Actions to Reduce Gun Violence

On May 14th, President Biden published an OpEd in USA Today announcing that the Biden-Harris Administration is taking new action to implement the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act and maximize the benefits of the law, reducing gun violence and saving lives. The OpEd honors the lives of those killed one year ago in the Buffalo, New York shooting, and the Uvalde, Texas shooting which came less than two weeks later.

President Biden responded to these senseless acts of violence by working with Congress to break the logjam and sign into law the most significant gun safety legislation in nearly 30 years. As a result, the Biden-Harris Administration is taking actions to keep guns out of dangerous hands, run enhanced background checks, increase mental health funding, make schools safer, and expand community violence interventions.

These steps are already making a real difference, but our work is not done. In the last year, we’ve had more than 650 mass shootings and well over 40,000 deaths due to gun violence. Guns are the number one killer of children and teens in America. President Biden has continually urged Congress to ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, require gun owners to securely store their firearms, require background checks for all gun sales, and repeal gun manufacturers’ immunity from liability. President Biden has taken more executive action to reduce gun violence than any other president; now, Congress must act to save lives.
