Nebraska Democratic Party Response to the Election of House Speaker Mike Johnson Today
LINCOLN, NE – The Nebraska Democratic Party Chair Jane Kleeb issues the following statement regarding the newly installed House Speaker, Representative Mike Johnson of Louisiana, after three failed rounds of voting:
“Don Bacon predictably fell in line with the MAGA wing of the Republican Party after weeks of pretending to be a voice of reason. Bacon is no different than Speaker Johnson—they both want a national ban on abortion and they both want to raise the retirement age for social security.
We all knew Representatives Mike Flood and Adrian Smith would take their marching orders from the GOP leadership and never hide who they are—partisans every day, all day. Bacon, on the other hand, threw his fake moderate cape in the trash yet again today by installing House Speaker Johnson and added to the chaos that paralyzed the GOP for three weeks.
The people of NE-02 deserve new leadership, with Tony Vargas, who has a proven track record of working for families, listening to the majority of Nebraskans, and passing bipartisan common-sense legislation. “

- After multiple failed and embarrassing rounds of votes, House Republicans finally elected Speaker Johnson who was the main architect to overturn the 2020 Presidential Elections.
- His all-out attack on abortion would involve no exceptions, penalties for women and doctors, and denying contraceptives at the national level.
- He will gut Social Security and Medicare if given the opportunity.
- Speaker Johnson is adamantly against women’s rights and same-sex marriage.
- In a rush to install a new House Speaker, the House Republicans have installed someone more extreme than MAGA poster boy and Trump “yes-man” Jim Jordan.
