Nebraska Democratic Party Response to the First Republican Primary Debate and the GOP Candidates Who Attended

LINCOLN, NE – The Nebraska Democratic Party’s Executive Director Precious McKesson issued the following response to the first Republican Primary Debate being held on August 23, 2023.

“The Republican presidential hopefuls in today’s first debate are the most extreme slate in history. Republicans are out of sync with the majority of Americans as they focus on cultural wars rather than solutions that help Americans pocket books. Instead of debating issues like social security, reproductive freedom, criminal justice reform, gun safety, or climate change, they will spend their time on stage cozying up to the four-time indicted Donald Trump.

While President Biden is bringing billions in economic activity to Nebraska, Ron DeSantis is attempting to erase Black American history. Mike Pence and the rest of the candidates want to push a nationwide ban on abortion. While Chris Christie is now speaking some truths about how reckless Trump is, he was silent during his time in office.

Over the last two years, President Biden and Vice President Harris have introduced and passed historic legislation that will put our country on the right track. They have proven this by way of the Inflation Reduction Act, the American Rescue Plan Act, the CHIPS and Science Act, the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, and the PACT Act.

The current pool of Republican presidential hopefuls use fear-mongering to divide us and are focused on chipping away at our fundamental rights while ignoring existing inequities.

Democrats across the nation stand ready to defend such rights and freedoms. The Nebraska Democratic Party looks forward to contributing to a Biden-Harris victory in 2024 and preserving the freedoms of all Nebraskans.”
