Press release: NDP’s Kleeb comments on Fortenberry resignation

Nebraska Democratic Party Chair Jane Kleeb issued the following statement Saturday in response to the resignation of GOP Rep Jeff Fortenberry following his conviction earlier in the week for lying to the FBI about accepting illegal campaign donations.

It is time to break up the corrupt, one-party grip the Republican Party has on our great state,” Kleeb said. “Democrats are prepared to run and win in order to address the issues Nebraskans care about — from healthcare to leveling the playing field for family farmers and ranchers. Fortenberry and the Republicans spent the last year ignoring the truth — Fortenberry lied, broke the law and lost the trust of voters.”

Secretary of State Bob Evnen said Friday that under the law, the governor must call a special election within 90 days of a resignation.

Democratic state Sen. Patty Pansing Brooks is already running for the 1st District seat.

Nebraska’s primary election is set for May 10. The general election is Nov. 8. A special election would be held only in Nebraska’s 1st Congressional District.
