Press release: NDP’s Ligon decries voter suppression petition effort

A top Nebraska Democrat on Wednesday decried a GOP-led effort to launch a petition drive requiring voters to show an ID before casting a ballot.

Petition organizers submitted proposed petition language earlier this week to the Nebraska Secretary of State.

“This is an attempt by the Republican Party to restrict and block voters from participating in free and fair elections,” said Democratic National Committeewoman Charlene Ligon “The Nebraska Democratic Party is opposed to this assault on voting rights.”

Ligon’s mother, voting rights activist Evelyn T. Butts, took a Virginia case to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1966 that knocked down a poll tax designed specifically to exclude poor people from voting.
