Nebraska Democratic leaders issued the following statements Tuesday in response to the indictment of Republican Congressman Jeff Fortenberry for lying to the FBI while federal agents were investigating campaign contributions funneled to him from a Nigerian billionaire.
Knowingly making false statements to a federal agent is a felony, punishable by up to five years in prison.
“Fortenberry’s reported lies violate the trust of Nebraskans, only confirming that the swamp Trump promised to drain is actually the Republican Party,” said NDP Chair Jane Kleeb. “Serving 16 years in Congress has tainted Fortenberry, who cares more about political donations than serving the people of our state.”
Said Janet Chung, chair of the Lancaster County Democratic Party: “Jeff Fortenberry is in office to rubber-stamp policies for wealthy donors. It’s all about the money and power for him.”
