Public Official or Candidate? Stothert Blurs the Line in Latest Media Stunt

Lincoln, NE—Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert announced Tuesday, a week before Election Day, new city spending decisions at a press event from her campaign office – a clear violation of ethics for elected officials running for office.

In response, the Nebraska Democratic Party (NDP) yesterday filed a complaint with the Nebraska Accountability and Disclosure Commission, urging NADC to investigate whether Omaha city resources were used to advance Stothert’s campaign.

“Mayor Stothert didn’t simply toe the line on campaign integrity, she leaped right over it,” said NDP Chair Jane Kleeb. “If Mayor Stothert is now using her campaign to announce changes to the city budget, we should all question whether the Mayor is more concerned about the public or her own re-election.”

The press event was announced to media by Stothert campaign staff and drew upon expertise from City Hall staff. The event was a vehicle for Stothert to announce new city spending to repair crumbling roads in Omaha.
