Nebraska Democratic Party Statement on Appealing the Working People Party Ruling to the Nebraska Supreme Court
LINCOLN, NE – The Nebraska Democratic Party Chair and ASDC President Jane Kleeb issued the following statement regarding appealing the Working People Party ruling to the Nebraska Supreme Court:
“Yesterday’s ruling doesn’t end this fight – we’re appealing, and from what I understand, so is the Republican Party. Judge Ideus’s decision is not a win for the spoiler party – it is proof the law has a hole big enough to drive dark money through, which is bad for our collective democracy.
The Court wrongly rejected our claims, adopting a meritless argument that the Republican Secretary of State manufactured. We followed Nebraska law when we filed this challenge, which we will argue on appeal. Our appeal is on solid ground. The ‘Working People Party’ violates a state law on using part of the name of an existing party – the Working Families Party.
Win or lose at the Supreme Court, one fundamental fact remains – we ask the Legislature to close this gap next session. Certify partisan candidates like most states already do, and require any new party to organize at least a year before an election. No more late-cycle gamesmanship deciding who’s on our ballot.
These aren’t organic grassroots efforts by a legitimate new political party. These are late-cycle spoiler operations designed to confuse and depress the vote.
Voters deserve less confusion and more reliability on who the real candidates are fighting for them versus a bunch of pawns in a billionaire’s game.”
