As the dust finally settles from the primary election, Trump-backed Charles “Dubya” Herbster and his ridiculous, horrendous cowboy hat have been sent packing back to Missouri by voters in the Republican gubernatorial primary.
And it’s a safe bet that the folks most-saddened about that development are the owners of Nebraska’s TV stations, who benefited from a tsunami of Herbster TV ads during his largely self-funded (more than $11 million) failed campaign.
It’s becoming apparent that the former president’s sway over voters is waning. You will recall that Trump came to a Herbster rally in the closing weeks of the campaign.
But Trump and Herbster aside, our work in Nebraska is just getting started, as we now move on to the General Election on Nov. 8.
First, though, voters in Congressional District 1 now have a Special Election on June 28 to fill the term of disgraced former Republican Rep. Jeff Fortenberry, who resigned after being found guilty of lying to FBI investigators about illegal donations to his campaign.
Democratic state Sen. Patty Pansing Brooks is poised to win that race — the winner of which will serve until January — and winning the General Election in November for a full term.
And we need all hands on deck — Democrats and Independents — to make sure she claims the CD1 seat!

Political trailblazer Helen Boosalis is the inspiration for the NDP Women’s Caucus scholarships to benefit women students. The Inspiring Women Scholarship, established in 2009 following Boosalis’ death, will be awarded to three women; one from each congressional district in Nebraska. Beginning in 2021, the NDWC has added an additional $500 scholarship for Democratic women who are non-traditional students.
The former Lincoln mayor and gubernatorial candidate was an inspiration to Nebraska Women. The Nebraska Democratic Women’s Caucus (NDWC) wanted to find a way to honor her while encouraging tomorrow’s female political leaders and established $500 scholarships awarded to Nebraska Democratic women who are active in their communities and progressive politics.
