Well, Gov. Pete Ricketts and Attorney General/Legal Eaglet Doug Peterson insulted Nebraska voters Wednesday by joining other GOP-led states in a ridiculous Texas lawsuit that asks the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn the presidential election results in four key swing states.
Nebraska Reps. Jeff Fortenberry and Adrian Smith shamelessly joined an outrageous friend-of-the-court petition to support Trump’s election coup.
Those GOP “leaders,” it seems, are buying into the absurd theory touted by President Trump that because record numbers of people voted by mail in the Nov. 3 election that their votes should not be counted and that the Republican-controlled legislatures in those states should decide who gets their electoral votes.
Absurd, indeed.

Late Wednesday afternoon, in as clear a demonstration as there ever has been of the authoritarian rot at the heart of the Republican Party, 17 other states, all governed primarily by Republicans, filed an amicus brief in support of the ludicrous lawsuit being brought by Ken Paxton, the indicted Republican attorney general of Texas, that seeks to overturn the results of the presidential election by disenfranchising millions of voters in Wisconsin, Michigan, Georgia, and Pennsylvania.
But they’re willing to sign onto the closest thing we’ve had to secession in 150 years because the Republican Party has created a couple of generations of leaders who simply can’t think of any other way to do politics than to scorch the earth, win or lose. Zero-sum democracy is untenable.
But the Texas case is Big Casino for these folks. They all believe that the Supreme Court will ride to their rescue and disenfranchise millions of people whom they don’t believe should be allowed to vote anyway. The Republican Party is now a seditious, subversive organization, a Fifth Column of organized authoritarian yahoos. Where’s Joe McCarthy when you need him?
