NDP Chair Jane Kleeb said that Nebraska’s GOP House members turned their backs on the nation late Tuesday by voting against the Senate-passed bill to extend the nation’s debt limit through early December.
The temporary extension is only a short-term fix, delaying the looming potential fiscal crisis until later this year. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has warned there could be catastrophic consequences if the borrowing limit is not increased.
The measure passed 219 to 206.
“Shame on Reps. Bacon, Fortenberry and Smith for voting to block the measure,” Kleeb said. “It’s absurd they would oppose it, since they approved most of the Trump spending that is coming due — including the massive 2017 tax breaks for the richest Americans.”
