Sen. Bob Krist, candidate for Nebraska Governor, and Sen. Lynne Walz, candidate for Lt. Governor, issued the following statement today regarding yesterday’s shooting at a Maryland newspaper.
“Freedom is not free. Tragically we are reminded of that today as we mourn the violent deaths of five employees of the Capital Gazette newspaper in Annapolis, Maryland yesterday and the wounding of two others.
As members of the news media, theses citizens were gunned down while working in a profession that is constantly criticized and ridiculed. However, as we approach the celebration of the birth of our nation next week, let’s remember the importance of having a free and open media.
British authorities attempted to prohibit the publication and circulation of information of which they did not approve, which led to our founding fathers demanding our rights to open and free speech. The First Amendment permits information, ideas and opinions without interference, constraint or prosecution by the government. Please join us in saying a prayer for these journalists, their families and friends.”
