Will Nebraska Republicans Stand Up To Russia?

In the not so distant past, the GOP was known as the party that was the toughest on the USSR and then Russia.  Conservative icon Ronald Reagan labeled the USSR an “evil empire” and demanded that Gorbachev tear down the Berlin Wall.  Republicans like to give credit to Reagan for ending the Cold War. Recently, […]

Trump’s Unprecedented Assault On The Constitution

During the Obama years, the GOP liked to posture as the party that had the most reverence for the Constitution.   When those claims were boiled down to their essence, conservatives appeared to be of the belief that the Constitution only protected the wealthy and gun owners.  I never heard them express any support for […]

Nobody Is Coming For Your Guns – The GOP Is Coming For Your Health Care

The right wing of the GOP has always been opposed to universal health coverage.  They simply don’t believe it is a legitimate function of the government to spend taxpayer dollars to help the poor and the sick obtain health insurance.  That philosophical hostility is based upon the radical right’s adherence to the immoral and arid […]

No One Was Ever Coming For Your Guns – The GOP Is Coming For Your Medicare

Early in the 2016 primary process, Trump presented himself as a different kind of Republican in many ways.  One of the Orange Hued Mogul’s most significant and early promises was his pledge that he wouldn’t cut Social Security and Medicare.  This put him at odds with his Presidential rivals and the Republicans in Congress who […]

The Trump Presidency – Peril And Opportunity

Donald Trump’s victory in the electoral college was one of the greatest surprises and upsets in American political history.  Even Trump’s campaign didn’t think he would win.  That’s why Trump appeared to be overwhelmed and humbled when he visited President Obama shortly after the election.  It was obvious from that visit that Trump only has […]

Election 2016 – There Is A Silver Lining In the Gray Cloud

Donald Trump’s victory in the electoral college must rank as one of the greatest shocks and electoral upsets in U.S. history.  Almost nobody foresaw this outcome.  Just about all of the polls and prognosticators pointed to a comfortable victory for Hillary Clinton and the Democrats regaining control of the U.S. Senate.  Instead, the Democrats lost […]

We Must Stop Ricketts’ Attempt To Buy A Rubber Stamp Legislature

As we’ve discussed here before, the stakes in the federal elections couldn’t be any higher. Hillary Clinton is running against a dangeous GOP nominee who has the potential to wreck the nation – and even the world.  The stakes are just as high in this cycle in the legislative races.  Nebraska faces an unprecedented challenge […]

Vote Democratic To Break The Gridlock And Save The Planet

The Obama era has been marked by unprecedented obstruction – and even in some cases outright sabotage – from the Republican members of Congress.  In looking at Obama’s nearly eight years in office, it is pretty evident to all but the most bitterly partisan Republican, that the Republicans in Congress had no intention of working […]

Mayor Stothert, Don Bacon Stick With Trump Despite More Allegations Of Groping Women

OMAHA, NE – Earlier this morning, Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert and Don Bacon stuck with Donald Trump for President despite the shocking video footage that exposed Trump touting regularly groping women without their consent. Over the past six days Donald Trump’s alleged history of sexual assault and inappropriate behavior towards women and underage girls has […]

GOP Needs Voter Amnesia And Bad Memories To Win Elections

Since the right wing takeover of the Republican party in 1994, this radicalized party’s history is one littered with failure. The Congressional Republicans lurch from one phony, self created “crisis” to another. Since 1995, the Congressional Republicans have shutdown the government three times and have threatened to shut it down more times than we can […]

Nebraska Republicans Are A Profile In Cowardice

The political world has been rocked by a lewd and crude tape in which Donald Trump said that he used his celebrity status to sexually assault women.  Trump’s political problems have been worsened further by his bizarre debate performance on October 9, 2016.  At that debate, Trump did everything he could to publicly humiliate Hillary […]

Nebraska GOP Reign Of Error: Ricketts And Daub Trample On The Constitution And Sabotage Nebraska Football

I can tell you as a long time student of Nebraska politics and football that it is a rare occasion when the two intersect. The most prominent mix of the two probably occurred when Richard Nixon visited the UNL campus in January 1971 to honor the Huskers for their first football national championship. Nixon’s recognition […]

NEGOP Leaders Backing Trump

Statement from Chair Vince Powers: “Don Bacon, Jean Stothert, Pete Ricketts, Deb Fischer, Jeff Fortenberry, have no decency left.  Each one of them has betrayed the hardworking people of Nebraska, and turned their backs on the core values of decency, and honesty that all Nebraskans hold dear,”  said NDP Chair Vince Powers.   “All these NEGOP […]

Bernie Sanders Is Right: Don’t Vote For A Third Party Candidate

Currently, Hillary Clinton holds a narrow lead over Donald Trump in the polls.  At the same time, two third party candidates are drawing somewhere in the neighborhood of 12% of the vote.  Libertarian Party nominee Gary Johnson is around 9% and Green Party nominee Jill Stein is at 3%.  Polling indicates that about half of […]

Vote For Hillary Clinton To Keep The Change

Our country voted for change when we elected Barack Obama President in 2008.  The country badly needed change since the economy was in a near Depression and we were bogged down in two failed wars.  When President Obama took office in 2009, the economy was losing 800,000 jobs per month, middle class wages were down, […]

Rep. Fortenberry’s Daughter Says Trump Hates Women

Today, Congressional Correspondent Billy House tweeted “Not all perfect inside room, Rep. Fortenberry told Pence his young daughter was upset and told her Dad, ‘Trump hated women.’” Nearly all women in Nebraska agree with Rep. Fortenberry’s daughter who said she thinks Donald Trump hates women, EXCEPT two: Mayor Jean Stothert and Senator Deb Fischer. The Nebraska Republican Party’s top […]

Prominent Nebraska Republicans Support Trump Despite His Support Of Putin and Russia

Donald Trump is the most unpopular, obnoxious, arrogant and poorly informed major party nominee in U.S. history.  His current status as the GOP nominee is a clear sign that there is something very wrong with the Republican Party.  As we’ve discussed here before, it was the right wing media that created Trump and made his […]

Do Nebraska Republicans Back Russia?

We now have the bizarre and unprecedented spectacle where a major party ticket has praised Russian strong man Vladimir Putin. At the pathetic commander-in-chief forum, Trump said Putin “has been a leader far more than our president [Obama] has been”. Mike Pence doubled down on the ticket’s praise for Putin by saying: “I think it’s […]

Statement on the Commander in Chief Forum (9/07/2016)

Yesterday, 5 bipartisan members of the Nebraska’s Veterans for Hillary organization spoke out on why we know Donald Trump is temperamentally unfit and unqualified to serve as our Commander- In – Chief.  We said that Hillary Clinton is the obvious choice to be our next Commander-in-Chief.  Her superb performance at last night’s Commander -in- Chief […]

Our Message To Senator Ben Sasse: America Is Still Great

When he announced for the U.S. Senate in 2013, Ben Sasse prognosticated that the implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) would cause America to “cease to exist.”  Sasse’s apocalyptic prediction of doom was well within the Republican mainstream during Obama’s first term.  Numerous prominent Republicans predicted that Obama’s policies would destroy the country.  For […]

This Labor Day Weekend – Thank A Union

Soon most of us will be enjoying the three day Labor Day weekend.  We should never take long weekends for granted because America’s wealthy and corporations didn’t voluntarily agree to this reform.  Instead, America’s workers fought hard for holiday weekends and other benefits we assume we will always enjoy.   We can’t be complacent […]

The Ricketts Administration Is Unraveling

Since he has been inaugurated as Governor, Ricketts has visibly struggled in his job.  The Department of Corrections continues to disintegrate and Ricketts has failed to come up with any solutions – much to the frustration of the legislature.  At the same time, Ricketts’ regressive and partisan agenda has been stymied by a coalition of […]

GOP has only phony scandals to push

As we’ve discussed here before, the GOP has a history of trying to create phony scandals to win elections.  The GOP knows that if the election is about Trump, the GOP platform and the GOP’s bad record, they will lose – and lose badly.  That’s why they try to falsely convince voters that Hillary Clinton […]

Time for Ricketts to Come Clean About Dirty GOP Sex Video

“Ricketts knew a year ago about the sex video, asked Kintner to resign and then did nothing. The fundamental question is why did Ricketts keep this from the public for over a year and only when another brave state senator made a statement to press call upon Kintner to resign? A year has gone by […]

At the end of the first week of August 2016, Hillary Clinton had a solid 7 point lead in the various polling averages. Democrats began to envision a new era of Progressive reform with a Clinton Presidency and a Democratic Congress. Republicans were in a state of despair and panic.  Some Republican leaders even began […]

Ricketts Has Perpetuated The Nebraska GOP’s Culture Of Corruption

One of the many down sides of the Nebraska GOP’s control of the state Constitutional offices and Unicameral is that it is difficult to hold their elected officials and candidates to account for their misdeeds.  This has created a certain arrogance and high handedness that makes them believe that they can do anything and get […]

The GOP Is The Party Of Wall Street

One of the tired and false talking points we hear from the GOP is that somehow Hillary Clinton and the Democratic Party are allied with Wall Street.  The Republicans are pushing that phony talking point to deflect from their support for the policies that crashed the economy in 2008-09 and their unswerving support for Wall […]

The GOP Will Try To Elect Trump By Pushing Phony Scandals

Citizens United Must Be Reversed

In 2010, five Republican appointees on the U.S. Supreme Court in the Citizens United decision opened the floodgates to secret, corporate and special interest campaign contributions.  These five justices made the specious claim that money is speech.  This finding can be found nowhere in the written text of the Constitution.  These five unelected justices in […]

A Trump Presidency Would Tank the Economy and Blow up the Deficit

Since the Republicans instituted supply side or trickle down economics during the Reagan Presidency, we’ve seen a recurring pattern where a Republican President sends the economy into a recession and blows up the deficit. Once a Democratic President is inaugurated, the Republicans do nothing but obstruct, offer nothing and tell us it is time for […]

Senators Ben Sasse and Deb Fischer Voted to Give Guns to Terrorists

Tragedy struck in Orlando on June 12. A perpetrator inspired by ISIS used military style weapons to murder 49 people and wound 53 others at a nightclub. This kind of lone wolf terrorist attack is perhaps the greatest security threat currently posed to the U.S. A large scale, 9-11 type attack, is much less likely […]

Why the GOP Establishment Tolerates Trump’s Racism

The political world has been rocked by Trump’s racist comment that Judge Gonazlo Curiel’s “Mexican heritage” constituted an “absolute conflict” for him to preside over the Trump University litigation. The presumptive nominee doubled down on those bigoted remarks when he expressed doubt that a Muslim judge could be neutral in a case involving him or […]

Ricketts’ Extremism Threatens Nebraska’s Economy

The right wing media routinely demonizes women, African-Americans, the LGBT community, Hispanics and anybody else who opposes the agenda of the radical right.  This kind of trash and nonsense is spewed out every day on a 24 hour basis.  That’s why State Party chair Vince Powers calls AM radio: “Hate radio.”  All of this daily paranoia, […]

How The Right Wing Media Destroyed The GOP And Created Donald Trump

When the GOP primary cycle began in 2015, the pundits told us that the Republican Party had a “deep bench” of contenders and it’s strongest field of Presidential candidates since 1980.  What ensued was the most bizarre primary fight in the history of the U.S.  We witnessed leading GOP Presidential candidates talking about the size […]

If Major Republican Leaders Won’t Endorse Donald Trump, Then Why is Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert?

OMAHA, NE – Yesterday the political shockwaves were still being felt with Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert’s public endorsement of Donald Trump for President. With Jean Stothert’s endorsement of a candidate who calls women “dogs” and “fat pigs” and Mexican immigrants “rapists” and “drug dealers”, the question Omahans are still asking her is: why? On Wednesday, […]

On Wednesday, former […]

DID RICKETTS ENDORSE TRUMP TO KEEP TRUMP QUIET?

LINCOLN–Back in February, it was revealed that the mother of Gov. Pete Ricketts, Marlene Ricketts, gave $3 million to the anti-Trump super PAC, Our Principles PAC. When Donald Trump got word of this, he tweeted the following: “I hear the Rickets family, who own the Chicago Cubs, are secretly spending $’s against me. They better be […]

Fortenberry and Smith’s House of Horrors

During the 2014 election cycle, the GOP told the voters that if they were given control of both Houses of Congress, they would get things done for the American people.  For example, Deb Fischer told voters to vote Republican to “end the gridlock.”  Shortly after the Republicans won the 2014 elections, Mitch McConnell said: “I don’t […]

Rookie Governor Ricketts Repeatedly Rolled By Legislature

When Ricketts was elected Governor in 2014, many Nebraskans were concerned that he would be able to ram a radical agenda through the legislature that would squander Nebraska’s hard earned rainy day fund and turn our state into a Kansas type budget dystopia. Moreover, there were legitimate fears that Ricketts would destroy the unions like […]

The Nebraska GOP’s Effort To Make Nebraska Irrelevant Was Thwarted

One of the more interesting and significant developments in this year’s legislative session was the failure of the Nebraska GOP to ram through a bill returning Nebraska’s electoral vote law to the previous winner take all system.  That previous law made Nebraska completely irrelevant in the Presidential general election.  A Democratic led filibuster stopped the […]

The Search For The Moderate Republican

The press – both national and local – is forever in search of the ever elusive moderate Republican.  Many reporters are baby boomers (or older) and have fond memories of the likes of Dwight Eisenhower, Gerald Ford and George H.W. Bush.  Many in the press are still hopeful that a new version of one of […]

Happy 6th Birthday Obamacare!

Last month marked the sixth anniversary of the passage of the landmark Affordable Care Act (ACA).  The goal for this legislation was to insure more Americans and bend the cost curve in health care inflation.  Thus far, this 2010 health care reform law has met many of it’s goals despite bitter opposition and at times, […]

NDP Chair Releases Statement on Nebraska State Legislature Rejecting a Fourth Attempt at a Medicaid Expansion

LINCOLN— After the fourth year in a row that the Nebraska State Legislature has failed to pass a Medicaid expansion and help those who continue to fall through the cracks of the system, the Nebraska Democratic Party Chair Vince Powers released the following statement: “I am very disappointed that the far right wing members of the […]

Reckless Republicans Not Ready To Protect America

Tragedy struck again last week when terrorists attacked Brussels in a series of bombings.  Before the smoke even cleared, the Republicans turned this tragedy into a partisan food fight and blamed President Obama – not the terrorists – for the attacks.  The air time on Fox News and AM radio was dominated by the likes […]

Why The GOP’s Apocalyptic Predictions Of Doom Matter

As I’ve written here on previous occasions, the Republicans have been making predictions since 1993 that the policies of Democratic Presidents will cause recessions and even destroy the country.  In 1993, every prominent Republican boldly prognosticated that President Clinton’s deficit reduction bill would cause a recession.  Beginning shortly after his inauguration, the Republicans upped the […]

Ben Sasse And Kay Orr Throw Donald Trump Under The Bus

A few months ago I wrote a piece which correctly pointed out that no prominent Nebraska Republicans were willing to denounce or otherwise stand up to Donald Trump’s racism and xenophobia.  At the time, the conventional wisdom was that it was just a matter of time until Donald Trump imploded and he dropped out of […]

The Nebraska Democratic Party Releases Delegate Allocation

The Nebraska Democratic Party would like to thank our State Caucus Chair, Charlene Ligon, and the 250 plus volunteers who helped make the 2016 Nebraska Caucus a tremendous success. The NDP also wishes to express our tremendous gratitude to the nearly 35,000 Nebraskan Democrats who made their voice heard for this year’s presidential nominee. Below is the breakdown of the  delegates awarded as a result of our […]

Nebraska Democratic Party Chair Statement on Successful Caucus Day

LINCOLN—Nebraska Democratic Party Chair Vince Powers released the following statement on today’s presidential caucuses: “Today’s caucuses have been a great success. From Scotts Bluff to Omaha, Kimball to Lincoln, we have seen impassioned and energized Nebraska Democrats join their neighbors in support of the Democratic principles of fairness, inclusion and opportunity for all. While Nebraska […]

Why Does The GOP Have Any Credibility?

Over the last twenty five years, prominent Republicans have gotten into the habit of making predictions that turn out to be wildly erroneous and well off the mark.  If the Oval Office is occupied by a Democrat, the GOP predicts that President’s policies will ruin the country. On the other hand, if a Republican is […]

MAYOR STOTHERT CONTINUES HER TRAIL OF BROKEN PROMISES

Another year and another set of broken promises from Mayor Jean Stothert.  In her state of the City address today she once again failed to show any improvement in her three key promises to the citizens of Omaha; crime, job creation, and eliminating the bar and restaurant tax.    Chair Vince Powers pointed to the […]

Commit To Caucus On March 5

The national race between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders remains very competitive.  Thus far, Clinton has narrowly won contests in Iowa and Nevada, and Sanders won by a wide margin in New Hampshire.  I don’t buy into the conventional wisdom that after Clinton’s victory in Nevada that it’s all over but the shouting.  Sanders has […]

Supreme Court Vacancy Raises The Stakes

The unexpected death of long time Associate Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia has shocked the political and legal world.  All who knew Justice Scalia – notwithstanding their differences of opinion on legal and political issues – said he was a good man and good friend.  Liberal icon Ruth Bader Ginsburg was counted among Scalia’s closest […]

Ricketts’ Reign Of Error Continues

Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts got off to a poor start last year and it appears as though 2016 won’t be any better. Ricketts kicked off the new year by initially refusing to meet with President Obama when he visited Omaha in January.  This was an obvious snub since then Governor Johanns met with President Clinton […]

RICKETTS’ BAD DECISION PUTS DHHS AT RISK AGAIN

LINCOLN–Governor Ricketts’ unprecedented move hiring a private selection firm involved in the hiring of his directors has failed. In another display of poor judgement, Ricketts has placed Clarence Carter on his short list for Director of the Department of Health and Human Services.  Carter was previously forced to resign as Arizona’s Director of Economic Security […]

GOP Tax Plans Would Blow Up The Deficit And Give The Super Wealthy A Vast Windfall

Some of President Obama’s most unsung accomplishments are in the areas of taxes and deficit reduction.  What appears to be little known is that the 2009 Recovery Act included a $275 billion tax cut for the middle class and working poor.  It was the largest middle class tax cut in U.S. history. Another virtually unknown […]

Jean Stothert – Incompetence You Can Count On

Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert inherited a good situation when she was elected in 2013.  Jim Suttle had made the tough choices on the budget to once again place Omaha on a sound financial footing by raising the restaurant tax.  Thanks to Suttle’s engineering background, he saved the City of Omaha from an epic flood in […]

DIFFERENT DAY, SAME STOTHERT

LINCOLN– On Tuesday, Omaha was hit with four inches of snow, which was forecasted days earlier, however the city was completely unprepared despite the advanced warning. Major streets, such as Dodge Street, were closed as streets remain unplowed. Mayor Stothert’s Department of Public Works continues their slew of poor operations, and remain unable to execute […]

State Of The Union – We Are Better Off Now Than We Were 7 Years Ago

Last week was a big week for the Nebraska Democratic Party and Nebraska in general.  President Obama came to Omaha the day after his State of the Union Speech to discuss his accomplishments and the path ahead for the U.S.  The President gave an outstanding speech – punctuated with his usual soaring rhetoric – to […]

The State of Failed Leadership in the Ricketts Administration

LINCOLN– In his first year, Ricketts has not only failed to lead the state to fix current problems but has managed to create even more. From losing jobs, making no effort to retain one of Nebraska’s top employers and a Fortune 500 company, to his failure on prison reform resulting in riots and continued overcrowding, […]

Ricketts Refuses to Welcome 44th President of the United States to Nebraska

LINCOLN—Governor Pete Ricketts has rejected the White House’s invitation to attend President Obama’s speech at UNO’s Baxter Arena or greet President Obama at the airfield when he arrives in Omaha on Wednesday, January 13th. Ricketts pettiness demonstrates how out of touch he is with Nebraskans. When President Clinton came to visit in Nebraska in 2000, […]

We Need The Medicaid Expansion Now More Than Ever

Largely overlooked in the general relief when the U.S. Supreme Court narrowly found the Affordable Care Act to be constitutional in 2012, was the Court’s holding that the Medicaid expansion wasn’t mandatory for the states.  Instead, the 50 state legislatures and Governors would have to actually adopt the Medicaid expansion through the legislative process.  That […]

Republicans Want To Jeopardize The Economy By Putting Wall Street Back In Charge Again

When President Obama took office on January 20, 2009, the economy was in free fall largely due to a financial crisis caused by the greed and recklessness of the bankers on Wall Street.  The bankers precipitated this crisis by investing heavily in bond funds consisting largely of subprime home loans.  Once the housing bubble burst, […]

The Nebraska GOP Obama Care Replacement Plans Would Be A Lump Of Coal For Millions of Americans

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) was the most significant piece of social legislation to be enacted into law since the passage of Medicare and Medicaid in 1965.  Since the implementation of the ACA in October 2013, 17 million formerly uninsured Americans have obtained insurance coverage and the uninsured rate has dropped from 18% of the […]

Cowardly Nebraska Republicans Fail To Stand Up To Trump’s Racism And Xenophobia

There has long been a paranoid and racial element to movement conservatism.  We saw this disturbing trend begin with the Goldwater campaign in 1964 when he carried five states in the deep south based upon his opposition to the passage of the Civil Right Acts that year.  This trend was further amplified by Nixon’s “infamous […]

Nebraska Congressional Republicans Block Progress On Common Sense Gun Safety Reform

Once again, last week, we saw the same depressingly familiar scenario play out.  We had mass shootings in Colorado Springs, Colorado and San Bernardino, California in which scores of innocent people were killed and wounded by maniacs wielding military style assault weapons.   As usual, the Republicans called for thoughts and prayers for the victims […]

Can The Democrats Win The White House For The Third Time In A Row In 2016?

The conventional wisdom in the mainstream press is that it will be difficult for the Democrats to win the White House for the third consecutive time in 2016 since that has rarely occurred in the modern era.  Leading political analysts like Nate Silver and Charlie Cook are of the opinion that next year’s Presidential election […]

GOP’s Weakness On Terror Unwittingly Helps ISIS

The GOP has long been perceived by the mainstream media and a large percentage of the public as the best party for national security because they are “tough.” The cold, hard reality is that the GOP is tough but stupid.  That GOP stupidity masks an underlying weakness on terror that has unwittingly helped our enemies […]

Returning The GOP To Power To Keep The Country Safe Would Be Like Bringing Back Bill Callahan To Run The Nebraska Football Program

Tragedy struck recently in Paris in which a series of ISIS attacks resulted in the deaths of over 150 people.   Unfortunately, the GOP chose to play politics with the deaths of innocent people and and were quick to blame President Obama for the attacks.  This stands in sharp contrast to the days immediately after […]

Sasse’s Record Of Obstruction Contradicts His Maiden Senate Speech

Last week, Senator Ben Sasse received gushing praise for his maiden Senate speech from both the national and local media.  In that speech, Sasse decried the fact that the Senate doesn’t work anymore to solve the problems of the U.S.  He criticized what he termed: “bare knuckled politics, “radical tactics,” and the use of Senate […]

Rookie Governor Ricketts “Struggling” In His New Job

As we’ve discussed here before, Pete Ricketts is off to a very poor start as Governor.  He has made a series of mistakes that call into question his competence and ability to function successfully as Governor of Nebraska.  Rickett’s stumbling start has not gone unnoticed on the national level. Governing Magazine indicated that he is […]

Democratic Presidential Candidates on Environmental Issues

One of the biggest issues of the race for the Democratic nomination is a candidates’ stance on environmental policy. This is not only because Americans have recently made it clear that they would like their next president to have a strong stance on the environment, but also because much of the money in Democratic politics […]

Republicans Continue Efforts To Sabotage The Affordable Care Act

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) was the most significant piece of social legislation to be enacted into law since the passage of Medicare and Medicaid in 1965.  Since the implementation of the ACA in October 2013, 17 million formerly uninsured Americans have obtained insurance coverage and the uninsured rate has dropped from 18% of the […]

Is Jeff Fortenberry A Moderate?

Representative Jeff Fortenberry has successfully marketed himself as a moderate since he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2004.  For example, when I ran for Congress last year, I frequently heard from voters that Fortenberry wasn’t as extreme as the rest of the Nebraska Republican Congressional delegation.   The Lincoln Journal Star […]

Ricketts: Often Wrong But Never In Doubt

When Pete Ricketts ran for Governor last year, he promised to “Grow Nebraska.”  That was the central theme of his election campaign.  Ricketts proposed the usual tired conservative platform of tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations, and fewer regulations for big business as the magic elixir that would make our state more prosperous.  (What […]

GOVERNOR PETE RICKETTS CONTINUED HIS “REIGN OF ERROR”

LINCOLN – Governor Pete Ricketts continued his “Reign of Error”, when he revealed he has no clue as to the amount of taxpayer dollars he has spent traveling around the globe.   Mr. Ricketts claimed he would run the state like a business, but in the real world any executive that cannot document travel expenses would be […]

Congressional Republicans Are The Biggest Threat To The Economic Recovery

When President Obama took office, the economy was in free fall and losing 800,000 jobs per month.  Since he took office, the U.S. has experienced a record 66 consecutive months of private sector job growth and the economy has created on average over 200,000 jobs per month since 2013.  The unemployment rate is now lower […]

STOTHERT DOES NOTHING TO PREVENT HUGE JOB LOSS IN OMAHA

OMAHA-The Nebraska Democratic Party says Mayor Stothert owes Omaha and the state of Nebraska an explanation of why she and her administration did nothing to prevent the loss of one of Nebraska’s largest employers, ConAgra. Mayor Stothert’s negligence and failure to engage, allowed for a devastating loss of jobs for people in Omaha and for the state of […]

Why I’m Proud To Be A Democrat

I’m proud to be a Democrat due to our party’s many accomplishments over the years.  For example, nearly twice as many jobs were created during Democratic Presidencies as opposed to Republican Presidencies between 1962 and 2012.  At the present time, President Obama has created more jobs than the last two Republican Presidents combined and the […]

Will The GOP Members Of The Nebraska Delegation Hurt The American People Again With Another Government Shutdown And Default Threat?

For the second time in just two years, the Republicans in Congress are prepared to shutdown the government and hurt the American people again.  The 2013 shutdown was over the Affordable Care Act and this year’s shutdown will be over an effort to defund Plannet Parenthood.  This is approximately the 12th time the Congressional Republicans […]

Ricketts’ Reign Of Error Includes Bad Appointments To Key Positions

The Nebraska press and political insiders were dismayed by Ricketts’ failed first legislative session in which his agenda was largely ignored by the Unicameral due to his inexperience and weak staff.  As it turned out, several important measures such as the repeal of the death penalty and the granting of drivers licenses to the Dreamers […]

GOP Platform For 2016 Is George W. Bush On Steroids

I believe that history will regard George W. Bush as one of the worst – if not the worst – Presidents in American history.  When Bush took office in 2001, he inherited a projected 10 year budget surplus of $5.5 trillion from President Clinton.  By the time he left office, the annual deficit was $1.3 […]

The GOP Gins Up Phony Scandals To Distract From Its Bad Record And Extreme Agenda

Over the last 25 years, the GOP has tried to generate phony scandals about prominent Democrats to win elections and discredit Democratic Presidents.  The Republicans do this because they know that if the public becomes more aware of its record in office and extreme agenda, they are unlikely to win Presidential elections.  As it has […]

The Nebraska Democratic Presidential Caucus Will Make A Difference In 2016

We keep hearing from the mainstream media about the Republican party’s alleged “deep bench” of contenders who are vying for the Presidency in the 2016. In reality, the GOP Presidential field resembles the motley crew found in the bar room scene in the original Star Wars movie that was shot in 1977.  One can find […]

The Affordable Care Is Working – Ben Sasse Can Come Out Of His Survivalist Bunker

When he announced his candidacy for the U.S. Senate in October 2013, Ben Sasse made the ridiculous prediction that: “If the Affordable Care Act (ACA) survives, America will cease to exist.”  Sasse’s prognostication followed upon the heels of a whole string of apocalyptic predictions from his fellow Republicans – mostly notable John Boehner’s prediction that the ACA will […]

Is Ben Sasse A Radical?

Nebraska’s Congressional Republicans have long been very conservative and responsive to the demands of their party bosses and the out of state special interests who fund their campaigns.  Moreover, since the rise of the Tea Party in 2009, those same Nebraska Republicans have generally given into the demands of this group and done things such […]

Is This The Worst Congress Ever?

The current GOP led Congress is off to a horrendous start and things may get a lot worse before they get better.   This awful performance wasn’t what the Republicans promised during campaign 2014.  Many Republicans ran on the platform that electing a GOP controlled Congress would end the gridlock.  Shortly after the Republicans won the […]

We Need Common Sense Gun Safety Reform Now More Than Ever

The U.S. is the only industrialized first world country that is plagued by a wave of gun violence.   Our country’s loose gun laws are truly exceptional among first world countries and they even allow deranged individuals to obtain military style assault weapons.  Recently, there have been massing shootings by mentally disturbed individuals in Charleston, […]

RICHTERS NAMED NDP EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

The Nebraska Democratic Party has announced Hadley Richters as the new Executive Director to the organization. Richters had been working as the Interim Executive Director since the departure of Dan Marvin in November 2014. “Hadley is an outstanding political leader,” Vince Powers, Chair of the Party said. “She has played a critical role in countless […]

MAYOR STOTHERT’S 3RD BUDGET: FAILS ON HER PROMISE TO VOTERS

On Tuesday, Mayor Jean Stothert presented her 2016 budget proposal of $870 million to the Omaha City Council. Once again, her budget includes revenues from the restaurant tax.  Stothert was elected on the campaign promises of lowering property taxes and getting rid of the restaurant tax. On the 2013 campaign trail, Stothert rallied against the […]

Don’t Let The GOP Disparage Our Economic Achievements

When President Obama took office, the economy was on the verge of collapse and losing 800,000 jobs per month.  By the time of the general election in 2012, the economy was creating 100,000 jobs per month and the unemployment rate dipped just below 8%.  When that occurred, many prominent Republicans were in denial and alleged […]

Ricketts’ Lavish Funding Of Death Penalty Referendum Sets A Troubling Precedent

Governor Ricketts faced a difficult first legislative session in which most of his major policy priorities were simply ignored and where three high profile vetoes were overridden by bi-partisan majorities.  Ricketts was criticized by members of his own party for failing to engage the Unicameral in the early stages of the session and for hiring […]

Would The Founding Fathers Be Tea Party Republicans Today?

Since the July 4 holiday is approaching, I’ve been reflecting on the Founding Fathers and their monumental contributions to this great country.  That made me begin to think about the right wing Republican claim that the Founding Fathers would be Tea Party conservatives in the 21st century.   I can tell you from my historical […]

Will Ricketts Stand By And Do Nothing If The Supreme Court Blows Up Obama Care?

Currently pending before the U.S. Supreme Court (SCOTUS) is a case that could potentially blow up the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and cause more than 6 million people to lose their health insurance policies.  A group of radical right wing libertarians have filed a challenge to the ACA based upon an alleged drafting error in […]

NDP STATE CENTRAL COMMITTEE OPPOSES FAST TRACK AUTHORITY

LINCOLN– The Nebraska Democratic Party State Central Committee, on Saturday, June 20th, agreed with the Working Families Caucus to oppose the Fast Track Legislation pending before Congress. Ricketts Sacrificing Nebraskans’ Needs to Play Politics

LINCOLN–“Pete Ricketts refusal to present a plan to protect the 56,910 Nebraskans at risk of losing health insurance because of an upcoming U.S. Supreme Court ruling, proves that he has put his own political interests ahead of the needs of Nebraska families,” said Vince Powers, Chair of the Nebraska Democratic party. Ricketts stated Sunday that it would […]

Ricketts’ Reign Of Error Continues

New Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts recently finished a legislative session that some Republican insiders (justifiably) termed an “embarrassing start.”  Two prominent Republican lobbyists who spoke to me on background were both highly critical of Ricketts’ handling of the legislative session.  One lobbyist said the Senators perceived Ricketts’ approach as “heavy handed” and another told me […]

Barack Obama: How Good A President?

One of the common talking points on the right is that Barack Obama is the “worst President in history.”  (This talking point is rather ironic in light of the fact that many of the people saying it voted for George W. Bush two times.)  Just who are the worst Presidents in American history?  What made […]

Unicameral 2015 – Our Ideas And Values Won

The conventional wisdom in January was that – due to Ricketts’ election and GOP gains in the unicameral – right wing Republicans were going to dominate the 2015 legislative session and do to Nebraska what they did to Kansas.  However, in that very same month, a well placed source at the Capitol told me that […]

LINCOLN–Thanks to the leadership of Senator Jeremy Nordquist, DACA passed today by an overwhelming majority of votes in the Nebraska Legislature, allowing for young aspiring citizens to obtain driver’s licenses.  The bill was supported unanimously by Democratic senators with only 9 total nay votes coming from Republicans. Vince Powers made the following statement: “The leadership of Democrats in […]

Citing national recognition of Lincoln’s business climate and quality of life, Chris Beutler stood with Lincoln business and neighborhood leaders to announce his bid for re-election as Mayor of Lincoln. This morning, at an entrepreneurial hub in the Haymarket, Beutler declared, “Lincoln is on the right track, on a path that is leading this community […]

BRUNING PLAYS BOTH SIDES IN PRISON SCANDAL INVESTIGATION

LINCOLN– Led by Attorney General Jon Bruning, the state’s investigation into its own recent prison scandals has unsurprisingly presented a clear conflict.  Bruning has wrongfully acted as both defense counsel and prosecutor to state employees while conducting his own “investigation” into the state prison scandal. “Another sad day for Nebraska as Attorney General Jon Bruning announced that […]

CHARLIE JANSSEN’S CONFLICT OF INTEREST

Lincoln (10/24/14) – Today, Vince Powers, Chair of the Nebraska Democratic Party, held a press conference to address the issue of state contracts by the Republican Candidate for Auditor Charlie Janssen. RTG Medical, a company owned by Janssen, holds contracts with the State of Nebraska’s Health and Human Services (HHS) department. HHS is a department […]

IS THE OFFICE OF NEBRASKA STATE TREASURER VACANT?

Michael J. O’Hara, Democratic candidate for Nebraska State Treasurer, announced today that Don Stenberg might not be a registered voter. And, if so, Stenberg is barred from being a candidate for election as Nebraska State Treasurer this November 4th. In a letter delivered today to Secretary of State John Gale, O’Hara challenged Stenberg’s qualifications to […]

NEBRASKA DEMOCRATIC PARTY LAUNCHES ‘DANG STRAIGHT’ WEBSITE

LINCOLN-In advance of the one-year anniversary of the government shutdown, today the Nebraska Democratic Party launched a website, entitled “Dang Straight!” that highlights Congressman Lee Terry’s recent complaints over his salary. The website, www.dangstraight.org, documents Congressman Terry’s complaints over his congressional pay and his support of the government shutdown last year. The government shutdown started on […]

BEN SASSE CAN’T TAKE THE HEAT

LINCOLN-“We need a full time US Senator who doesn’t duck out when the heat is on. But at last night’s debate in Hastings, Ben Sasse was a no show,” said Vince Powers Chair of the Nebraska Democratic Party. “Ben Sasse showed how utterly unqualified he is by not showing up to a job interview with […]

MORE QUESTIONS FOR RICKETTS TO ANSWERLINCOLN-At a press conference held by Pete Ricketts yesterday, Ricketts was asked when he knew of the accusations of domestic assault facing his running mate, Lt Gov Lavon Heidemann. He answered, “I think we found out about the fact that he had a court hearing – a couple of weeks ago, at that time I think we hoped that it would be resolved, at least that’s what the Lieutenant Governor expressed to me was that he hoped to get it resolved.” In court documents presented at the hearing for the domestic violence protection order, the victim stated “I received a letter from Lavon on August 26, 2014. He offered various things but there is no amount of material offers that will lessen my fear of him.” Heidemann’s attempt to “resolve” the matter failed and on August 27, Ms. Bohling filed a petition and affidavit to obtain a domestic abuse protection order. Ricketts had the knowledge of the accusations of violence and the time to remove Heidemann from his ticket well before the election law deadline, but instead made the deplorable decision to wait for Heidemann to “resolve” the issue. On Sept 8th, a domestic protection order was granted and made public. Ricketts then chose a new running mate – one week after the Sept 1 deadline to change a name on the November ballot. John Gale, whose campaigns received thousands of dollars from Ricketts, ignored the law and placed Mike Foley’s name on the ballot. It is hypocritical that Mike Foley, the politician Ricketts has chosen to replace Lavon Heidemann, voted for the bill (LB 768, 2001) that is now our current law that set the September 1st date that the Secretary of State is now choosing to ignore. Pete Ricketts knew about the allegations of violence facing his running mate weeks before the deadline. He didn’t care about those allegations of violence until they were revealed to the public. Now it’s past the deadline, and he doesn’t care to follow state law.

LINCOLN-At a press conference held by Pete Ricketts yesterday, Ricketts was asked when he knew of the accusations of domestic assault facing his running mate, Lt Gov Lavon Heidemann. He answered, “I think we found out about the fact that he had a court hearing – a couple of weeks ago, at that time I […]

LEE TERRY: ROUGH WEEK

Tuesday: Roll Call — Terry Remains “10 Most Vulnerable” Roll Call reported last night, “Things were looking up for Terry when a third-party candidate and former Republican dropped out of the contest this spring. It should have allowed him to consolidate conservative support in the 2nd District, which Romney won with 53 percent in 2012. But polling […]

SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT: PETE RICKETTS AND MR HENCHMAN

Pete Ricketts is not playing straight with Nebraska voters about his involvement in raising taxes on hard working Nebraskans. In the debate last night, he said that his Platte Institute did not testify in support of raising sales taxes in Nebraska. In the transcript from the February 6th 2013 Revenue Committee hearing, Joseph Henchman says […]

LEE TERRY: HORRIBLE MOMENT

From Dan Marvin, NDP: “By calling his ‘nice house’ gaffe a horrible moment in his life, Congressman Terry is showing that he still doesn’t get it, and is more interested in putting himself above the thousands of national guard staff and other workers who were furloughed during the $24 billion government shutdown. No matter how […]

ASHFORD WANTS CONGRESSIONAL PAY CUT UNTIL BALANCED BUDGET ACHIEVED

From Dan Marvin, NDP: “The choice in November couldn’t be more clear between Brad Ashford’s proposal to cut the pay of a do-nothing Congress that isn’t working, and Congressman Terry, who somehow thinks it’s negative or a distortion to remind the voters of Congressman Terry’s own words last year about how he needed to keep his […]

MINIMUM WAGE WILL BE ON NOVEMBER BALLOT

It is official–hard working Nebraskans will get a chance to vote for a pay raise that helps lift thousands of their fellow citizens out of poverty and improve the state’s economy. REVOLVING DOOR KEEPS SPINNING WITH THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF PETE RICKETTS’ PICK FOR LT. GOVERNOR
