Nebraska Democratic Party Statement on the Signing of an Executive Order by the Trump Administration to Dismantle the Department of Education

LINCOLN, NE – The Nebraska Democratic Party Chair Jane Kleeb and Executive Director Precious McKesson issue the following statements regarding the signing of an executive order by the Trump Administration to dismantle the Department of Education:

“Our middle child is able to speak, flourish, and be a true light in this world because of the services the Department of Education funded. Our family is like millions across the country whose children have special needs. Republicans like Don Bacon are sitting on their hands and are doing nothing as Trump and Musk take a wrecking ball to our country from within. The Department of Education saves lives and Donald Trump’s Executive Order just signed the death of hope for millions of kids to be their best selves.” – NDP Chair Jane Kleeb

“I am disheartened right now as Trump signed an executive order to dismantle the Department of Education. I had the honor of being appointed to the Department of Education by President Biden to serve in his administration. I was part of a team that helped reopen schools after COVID-19. I traveled with Secretary Miguel Cardona and held conversations with numerous educators, parents, and students to truly understand the impact that COVID had on them. Although I was there for a short time, the impact we made was powerful and I remain friends with many of those dedicated public servants, many of whom have devoted their lives to ensuring education remains a top priority in the United States. Many no longer have jobs. It’s heartbreaking to see the president and a wrestling promoter dismantling an area that profoundly impacts countless individuals across the United States. Children with disabilities are no longer protected or prioritized, college students are at risk of losing their financial aid that so many depend on to further their education, and their civil rights have been compromised. It’s a sad day.

I urge you to take a moment to reflect on the current state of our world. In exactly two months in office, the Trump Administration has attacked federal workers, veterans, seniors, and now our children. Let us pray for a brighter future.” – Executive Director Precious McKesson
